GRANT MUDFORD Grant Mudford, Mark Johnstone (essay)
Grant Mudford, Mark Johnstone (essay): GRANT MUDFORD. Tokyo: Gallery Min, 1986. First edition. Text in English and Japanese. A near-fine softcover book with printed stiff wrappers: yellowing along the fore edges and minor shelf wear. Interior unmarked and very clean. Out-of-print.
11 x 11 softcover book with 84 pages and 40 duotone plates. Introductory essay by Mark Johnstone. Catalogue to an exhibition of Mudford's work in September 1986 at the Gallery Min in Tokyo. Mudford's early training in architecture is evident in the design sensitivity of these photographs of the man-made landscape. Austere studies of line, shape, rhythm, and texture these unpeopled street photographs reveal the uncommon beauty of common architectural details.
Mudford's work in this exhibit is reminiscent of the work of Lewis Baltz -- elegiac photographs depicting man's often-negative power over the landscape. The tension comes when such ugliness and even destruction is aestheticized. On a more prosaic level, this is a beautiful Japanese production of Mudford's work, which is well worth the attention.
